This Is America was an act of visual recharting, co-curated by Hello Human and ADITIONS at Alcova during Milan Design Week 2022.
Context
This is America brought 15 American design practices together not to confirm what American design looks like, but to disrupt it. Initially curated digitally as 3D renders mapping out each designer's work would occupy the room before any artwork was placed. With a variety of representation of artists and designers from different backgrounds and cultures. The Alcova's abandoned Military Hospital in Baggio, made the staging all the more charged. Placing an exhibition about the underrepresented side of American design created a quiet but powerful alignment.

Landing on the final lineup wasn't a quick single decision. The curators had extended conversations about what "underrepresented" actually meant to America and the rest of the world. Revisiting submissions and ultimately arrived at a lineup weighted toward a majority cross-section of BIPOC-identifying and female-identifying designers, while acknowledging that many more underrepresented groups existed beyond what one show could gather.
